WOWCube™ - Twisty Game Console
What were you doing at the age of 13? Reading comics? Eating dirt? I don’t really know what children do nowadays, and blissful 13 was a really long time ago for most of us. But I do know that most of you weren’t designing video game systems.
his was not the case for Savva Osipov. The Russian native 13-year-old, who moved to the US with his family, almost immediately got started on building his Rubik’s Cube-inspired gaming gadget. Featuring eight cubes connected via patented magnetic connectors, the WOWCube™ allows using the device for playing games, many of which use the Rubik’s Cube style of motion for direct, kinetic interaction with the game’s mechanics. Each cube features three screens that gamers will have to use while playing games on the unique gadget.
With the help of his father and the parent company – Cubios, young Osipov has already managed to raise over $500,000 in funding for the consequent development of three generations of prototypes of the device.
It’s for gaming
The WOWCube™ comes preloaded with some of the most popular video games on the planet, including SteamPipes, Butterflies, HyperSpace, Pong, and YellowBall. The device can store up to 24 games in its internal memory. More games will soon be uploaded onto the upcoming WOWCube™ Store mobile app.
Breaking from tradition and embracing the maker’s spirit, Cubios will also make the blueprints of the WOWCube™ available to anyone. With a little ingenuity and the help of a 3D printer, gamers will be able to enjoy the full features of the WOWCube™ by replicating one for themselves (for non-commericial use, obviously).
Technical Description
The WOWCube™ unit consists of eight identical sections that exchange data via groups of magnetic connectors. The connectors that as communicating devices also ensure the stability of the gadget’s entire structure, thus allowing the player to observe the gaming process on common faces comprised of displays located on four adjacent sections of the cube.
Each section of the cube contains:
- Three 1.56” 240x240 IPS TFT displays protected by Gorilla Glass;
- An STM32F405 microcontroller with 168 MHz clock speed and 192 kB main memory;
- An 8 MB flash memory;
- A 6-axis gyroscope and an accelerometer;
- A 540 mA/h battery;
- A BT module for connection with a smartphone, tablet or PC.
